Houses built in the 1920s and up to the Second World War were often built with mortar using “Black Ash” which has since been found to be detrimental to the galvanising of metal wall ties when moistened due to weathering through the mortar joints over many years.
If the galvanising becomes broken down, then rusting begins to occur to the wall ties and due to the lamination, the ties will increase in thickness and cause horizontal cracks to appear on the exterior of properties in the brickwork or rendering.
